In the Beginning and the Fall: How Truth Was Lost and What Remained

Before anything went wrong, everything was right. Genesis opens on a world with no lie in it anywhere, and this Interlochen, Michigan, Bible ministry starts there because the rest of the story only makes sense against that starting point.

The fall is the turn in the middle of that story. Understanding what changed, and what did not, is the key to seeing why God's Word still brings forth life today.

A World With Nothing False in It

Sun

At the end of the sixth day, God looked over what He had made. Genesis 1:31 records the verdict: "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good."

Message

Nothing in creation was out of place. Light, land, water, plants, animals, and people all did exactly what they were made to do. The man and woman walked with God in the garden, and there was no gap between what God said and what was real.

Book

That is what perfect truth looks like in practice. Not just correct information, but a whole world in agreement with the word that made it.

One Boundary, Clearly Stated

God gave Adam a single restriction. Genesis 2:17 says: "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die."

The command was clear, and so was the consequence. Life depended on trusting the word God had spoken.

How Deception Entered

Genesis 3 begins with a question rather than an attack. The serpent asks the woman, "Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?"

Notice the method. Deception did not invent a new world. It raised doubt about the word already given. A few verses later the serpent contradicts God outright: "Ye shall not surely die."

That is the first lie in Scripture, and it is aimed squarely at God's word. The woman ate, the man ate with her, and the agreement between creation and its Creator broke.

What the Fall Changed

The damage spread quickly and widely. Shame and fear came first, as Adam and Eve hid from God. Pain, hard labor, and death followed, spelled out in Genesis 3:16 to 19.

Scripture treats this as the moment the whole world shifted. Romans 5:12 explains that "by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin." Romans 8:22 describes creation itself as groaning "in pain together until now."

Every hardship people face today traces back to that one choice to believe a lie over a perfectly truthful word. Humanity fell, and the world it was given charge of fell with it.

What the Fall Did Not Touch

Here is the part that matters most. Deception damaged people and their world, but it never altered God's word or His ways.

Isaiah 40:8 states it directly: "The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever." The blueprints God wrote into creation kept working after Eden. Seasons still turned. Seeds still grew. Life still came from His commands.

And God answered the fall before Adam and Eve ever left the garden. In the same chapter that records the lie, He promised a descendant of the woman who would crush the serpent's head. How that promise was kept is the subject of The Word Made Flesh, and the evidence that His word stood firm through it all is gathered on The Proof.

Questions About Creation and the Fall

  • How many days does Genesis give for creation?

Genesis 1 describes six days of creation, and Genesis 2:2 records God resting on the seventh. The account closes each day with evening and morning.

  • Which two trees are named in the garden?

Genesis 2:9 names the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, both in the middle of the garden. Only the second was forbidden.

  • What were the serpent's exact first words?

Genesis 3:1 records them as a question: "Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?" Deception opened by casting doubt on what God had said.

  • Did the fall affect only people?

No. Genesis 3:17 says the ground was cursed because of Adam, and Romans 8:22 describes the whole creation groaning. The fall reached humanity and the world it lived in.

  • When did God first promise a way back?

Immediately. Genesis 3:15 contains the promise of a coming deliverer, spoken in the same conversation in which the consequences of the fall were announced.
